About the Homestead Tax Exemption

Homestead Exemption is a privilege offered to eligible taxpayers by the State of Mississippi.  The exemption is not granted automatically.  An application must be filed and each taxpayer must qualify for the exemption. 

YOU WILL NEED TO FILE FOR HOMESTEAD IF THE FOLLOWING CHANGES WERE MADE:

1. YOU BOUGHT PROPERTY.

2. IF YOU SOLD PART OF YOUR HOMESTEAD PROPERTY.

3. IF YOU BOUGHT MORE ACRES AND WANT TO ADD IT TO THE EXISTING HOMESTEAD.

4. IF YOU WERE MARRIED OR DIVORCED.

5. IF YOU BECAME 100% DISABLED.

6. IF YOUR SPOUSE DIED.

7. IF YOU TURNED 65.

 

1. When and where do I file for homestead exemption?

From January 1, through April 1, in the Homestead Office in the Oktibbeha County Courthouse, 101 E. Main Street Ste. 102, Starkville, MS.

 

2. What is the age limit for a taxpayer to receive special homestead credit?

65 on or before  January 1, he or she qualifies for the additional exemption.

 

3. What you will need to bring with you to file  Homestead for the first time? 

Tag Reciepts, or Tag Numbers, Warranty Deed, Closing Paperwork on your home and your SSN.

 

4.  Total Disability qualifies special Homestead, 100% disable and bring proof that shows disability from the Social Security office form (TPQY).
