Duties of the Circuit Clerk
- CLERK OF THE COURT (CIVIL
AND CRIMINAL)
- File all cases, giving each a number in the State or Civil docket
- Issue summons, subpoenas, etc.
- Summon jurors each term of court
- Swear jurors and witnesses to answer questions
- File all cases bound over to the action of the Grand Jury
- Make commitment papers to the Mississippi Department of Corrections
for those sentenced
- Certify copies of Orders of Sentence for those placed on probation
- Collect all fines and bond forfeitures
- Enter judgements into the Judgement
Docket Book
- Place all orders signed by Circuit Judges on record in the Circuit
Court Minute Book
- SELECTION OF THE JURY
- Custodian of the jury wheel
- Compile master voter list in January of each year, certifying
the number of voters to the Jury Commisioners
- In concert with the Senior Circuit Judge, establish the number
of jurors needed for the next fiscal year
- In concert wit the Jury Commisioners, select the jury as required
by the Court
- MARRIAGE
AND LICENSE
- Must have proof of age regardless of how old an individual is
- A blood test is required prior to applying for a marriage license
(test must not be more than 30 days old at time of application
filing)
- Individuals under 21 years of age must have one parent or guardian
sign the Marriage Record Book, granting consent
- Both parties to marriage must sign Marriage Record Book
- Issue marriage license after 3 days, or 72 hours
- Report to State Board of Health and Bureau of Vital Statistics
on all licenses issued
- REGISTRAR
- Handle voting registration.
Anyone 17 years of age, but 18 prior to next election, must register
to vote in state elections. For federal elections, one must be
18 in the primary
- Assist the Election Commisioners in the following duties: purging
of poll books, preparation of election material, vote persons
by absentee ballot, make any neccessary changes to poll books
